Did you know that LinkedIn have gone on the record to say that your profile is 14 x more likely to be viewed if you have a professional headshot?
A profile photo is your representative in the digital world. In recent studies, up to 90% of human resources people report they check out social media profiles, especially LinkedIn and Facebook, before inviting a candidate in for an interview.
Profile photos are so essential to modern communication that a good one’s become a basic necessity. And that couldn’t be truer than for those of us whose professional lives are tied to social media profiles. Clients look to it every time they interact with you online and even imagine it speaking the words you type.
So a good Headshot should…
Look like you
This may sound obvious but a business portrait or headshot isn’t a fashion portrait. So, no dramatic lighting, heavy make up or massively touched up images.
Reflect your business and business type
Whilst rules can be broken it is fair to say that certain industries do have a certain perceived look to them and deviating from that look too much isn’t wise.
Look relaxed, warm and happy
Even in the most serious of professions, it’s good to look approachable, honest and friendly. There is nothing worse than a ‘moody’ headshot.
Avoid busy patterns and stripes
Quite simply these can be a distraction from the face. For gents think carefully about the tie you are wearing and consider bringing a spare.
We’ve all had & seen horrific headshots [below] that either ooze insincerity or are a selfie that’s passable from a night out in 2014. Poor lighting, background distractions, strange angles and photos with family, friends or pets are all big turn-offs.
