Firstly, what do we mean by organic traffic?
Organic traffic is website visitors that have naturally found you via a search phrase. These visitors have not typed in your name, your URL or clicked on a paid advert. They have naturally found you by typing in a relevant keyword or phrase.
Why do you want organic traffic when there is paid means to get it?
Google Adwords has its place. However, it is only going to get more expensive as more people choose that over the long term gains you get through building a website that attracts organic traffic. By all means, use AdWords or social advertising to boost your business as and when, but the techniques we are going to cover ensures that you are building an authoritative website that provides value to your customers.
So how can you rely less on AdWords and increase your organic traffic base?
1. Keyword research.
Every website should be built on the foundations of a keyword analysis. Without knowing what your consumers are searching for, you are blindly building a website that will just not draw in decent organic traffic. If you already have a website and haven’t completed a keyword analysis, all is not lost. It is just more pain to optimise once a site is live due to the permalinks (URLs) and their possible 404 errors once optimisation is complete.
Beyond the website foundations, keywords need to be worked throughout the copy on all the pages, categories, products, tags and blogs.
2. Review your website.

Beyond that, check your analytics for pages that have a high bounce rate and work on those. Then take a look at the copy. No? then change it.
3. Content planning.

Write about what your customers what to know about and Google will give you a few brownie points.
We recommend that you find a routine and publish your blogs on the same day each week so that your audience become accustomed to when they are going to go live. Also, add sharing buttons to your blog so that people can easily share the content with their peers if they wish.
4. Social media.
Writing content is great but you need to use it as a marketing tool and get it in front of as many relevant people as possible. So share it with your audience via your social channels with a call to action so that you get the best engagement possible. You can get multiple updates out of one blog. We recommend sharing the new blog as follows:
- Twitter: Every day until the next new blog is published at various times, different intros and images (where possible). Utilise local and business networking hashtags as well as #sundayblogshare to help reach new audiences.
- Facebook: Once on the day it is published. And then share into relevant groups to capture a new audience. Then have in your arsenal for when the next time is right or for a throw back.
- Instagram. You can share more than once if you have many images. Also, mix up the wording and hashtags within the update and monitor what worked.
- LinkedIn. Once when the blog goes live on. Share into groups where possible. 2 weeks later (if not time sensitive) publish as a post as well.
- Pinterest. Pin once a week or once a day (however many times you use this platform) with differing images. Then pin them into other relevant pinboards.
5. Use data.
By looking at your Google analytics and Search Console (free tools) you can see what keywords people are finding you under and track visitor behaviour once on your site. This data is valuable. It gives you instant recommendations and actions including keywords and phrases that you may have thought of, pages that are losing visitors, where people are giving up in your sales process and more.
